WCA Degree Show 2014

It’s crazy to believe that this time last year I had finished my work, got my results and this crazy thing called “real life” had begun.

Last week I took a jolly over the Wimbledon to see the 3rd years degree show and it was fab! The year below me had a range of beautiful pieces from tutus to saris and Sackbacks to army uniforms. I got chatting to a couple of the girls on the day and, like last year, it sounds like the end was rather stressy, but they’re happy with how things have turned out. Well Done ladies and gentlemen…you did a fantastic job!

A general overview of the theatre where the costume and theatre design work was displayed. The collection in the centre are theatre costumes designed for the students by David Collis.

The other way…I only just realized how blurry this photo is. opps!

This little corner of 18th century goodness was home to some of my favourite pieces. This blue gown in the front had the most beautiful hand-stitched crosses all over it and the cut was beautiful. The 18th century man’s suit to the left has lovely dorset buttons. It was a joyful section!! I’ve left my catalogue at work but I will add names as soon as I can. I have a feeling these two pieces were made by two different Hannah’s, because my friend told me I was being name-biased. Total lies, I only checked the names of the ones I liked. My only comment was lots of people could have spent more time on the mounting, some of the sleeves looked a little odd.

Pretty things from the front!!! The sack back was nice from the front, but it was let down a little by the very wide back. They are difficult things to do though, so I have major respect for anyone giving them ago when the pressure is on at uni!

This was actually in Tech Arts, but it was so pretty!!

I know nothing about all this, but I think it was sculpted and then they make moulds from plastic and paint them? The paint effect was stunning!!

The Wimbledon College of Art show is on every year, roughly the 3rd week in June. All undergrad disciplines show work: Fine Art – Painting, Sculpture and Time Based Media. Theatre: Costume Interpretation, Costume Design, Set Design for Stage and Screen, Theatre Design and Technical Arts and Special Effects (TASE). Go and see it, it’s free, it’s always amazing and you’ll be seeing the work of future stars in the world of film, television and theatre. From my graduating class people are already working on blockbuster films such as Star Wars, making costumes for Paul McCartney music videos, setting up as high end bespoke clothes makers, making for the Royal Ballet, making for Disney….the list is like the who’s who of 21st century culture. and I’m at The Victoria and Albert Museum. So I’ll tag myself onto that list, if it’s not too braggy. Very proud of everyone! Go see the shows!

Congrats WCA.
